Fluffipede
Fluffipedes are native to the planet Sreteer where they live in the forests and feed on the detrius that covers the ground. They are friendly and form strong bonds with their mates and offspring. They communicate using their eye and fur color, feelers, and nearly inaudible trills. Their Color Shift language is only partially understood.
They have one eye in the middle of their head with feelers on either side. They are small and furry with many legs. Their bodies are so fat that the legs blend into the fur.
Fluffipede trills are more a vibration that you feel rather than hear. Sreteerans hunt by sound, so these creatures are almost completely silent, even when agitated.
Fluffipedes are exported as a food source. They reproduce quickly and contain a surprising amount of protien for such a small creature.
In a world where the hunters are sapient and aggressive, fluffipedes have several natural survival mechanisms. Rapid reproduction causes them to have large families, helping to enruse the survival of the species. Their colorful fur is perfect camouflage for blending in with the duff of the forest. Additionally, their vibrations and fur make them unpalatable for some creatures.
They are exported and transported all over the galaxy. They travel easily and it only takes a mating pair to set up a colony. This makes them a reliable source of food on long voyages. They thrive in any compost heap, so they recycle garbage while providing food.
Some people argue that they are much more intelligent than they are given credit for, and use their color shifts when in the presence of humans to substantiate this claim. Many are kept as pets with their owners swearing that they have developed a close bond with them.

These guys are too stinkin' cute! I love that people raise them for food, since they are easy to transport and raise, and they recycle your garbage, too. I need some for our compost heap at home! I don't think we'd eat them, we'd just coo over their fluff.
I know. I would make them be pets, too.
