Participation badge claim
Did you participate but didn't quite reach your goal? Congratulations anyway for the progress you made! Click on the participation badge to claim it:
You must claim your badge before December 8th. Badges will be delivered after the end of the event.
Rules
- You can write your novel with any writing software—we recommend Manuscripts. You don't need to publish your writing to take part.
- Your writing should be a novel, novella, a set of short stories, or anything else that qualifies as prose. If you want to worldbuild instead, check out WorldEmber next month!
- Writing done before November 1st doesn't count for this challenge! You can still use prep you've made in the previous months (such as outlines and characters) and even continue a story you've already started.
- You can break any of these rules if you want to go rebel! The point of NovelEmber is to challenge yourself to write a story you'll be proud of. Some examples of rebel goals are an interactive fiction game, a graphic novel, or writing an entire TTRPG campaign.
Other information
- There will be two prizes:
- Digital participation badge for anyone who has attempted the challenge but didn't quite get to their goal.
- Digital winner badge for everyone who gets to 50,000 words or achieves their rebel goal!
- Winner certificate that you can print to show off your accomplishment.
- To claim your badge, fill out the form that will be available during the month. Badges will be awarded all at once at the end of NovelEmber.
- Join our Discord server to find a community of Anvilites who are also writing this month!
- If you're not sure if your idea fits this challenge, the answer is probably yes! Go forth and write your next adventure!

Where does NovelEmber take place?
NovelEmber is an ONLINE event, making it accessible regardless of where you are in the world, or which time zone you're in! And you can write your prose in World Anvil's Manuscripts, or any writing tool you prefer—you'll be submitting your word count under the honor system.

How do I sign up for NovelEmber?
You don't need to sign up or pledge your project to take part—just start writing when the event starts! When you reach your goal, claim your badge and your winner certificate using the button at the top of the page.
Why did World Anvil start NovelEmber?
Our community asked us to create space to celebrate writing a novel (or tackling another BIG writing goal) in November. We’re not looking to throw shade, but we want our community—and any one else who wants to join in—to continue to celebrate November as a creative and inspirational month for the writing community.
What can I win for completing NovelEmber?
NovelEmber is a self-reported challenge, not a competition. We will definitely be offering digital badges and a certificate for winners! More details available soon.
