The motivation behind building The Spaceport

Fun experience highlighting diversity as power

Why I've Chosen an Alternative Timeline

I started writing the Spaceport series in the 80s. The world was different then.   September 11, 2001 changed everything. The pandemic of 2020 would have shut down the 'port. The current global environment is in many ways at conflict with many of the deeper, more idealistic views that make up the heart of these stories.   As the world changed more and more, I've had to decide what stories I want to tell. Imagining what Cordell and crew would do with the pandemic is an interesting story, but not the one I want to write.   Perhaps this is more fantasy or "uplit" with a science fiction twist. I've always described these stories as light hearted sci-fi. They do deal with difficult topics like truth, cancer, quality of life, and others. They deal with diversity and acceptance. They deal with what it means to be an ethical employer.   In the current environment of diversity, I have worried that some of these stories may be perceived as tokenism. That is absolutely not the intent. My heart in these stories is that diversity, literally the more the merrier, is critical to empowering any organization. I will not treat every possibility, and I may not always get it right, but I'm determined to do my best to portray people with respect.
